Fishing Charter Reports
Some information you can use about sport fishing in Kona, Hawaii…
Two 14,000 foot volcanic mountains rise above sea level and allows for light and variable winds year round off Kona. This makes for calm fishing conditions. It is possible to fish almost every day out of the year. The steep slopes of the volcanic mountains extend into the sea which makes the shoreline deep. It is 6000 feet deep just three miles out from Honokahau Harbor! In many sport fishing destinations a boat must travel great distances to get to the fishing grounds, in Kailua Kona, Hawaii the fishing starts just minutes outside of the harbor. This is the reason many sport fishing charters offer half day fishing trips. It is possible for a charter boat to do three half day fishing trips in one day during the longer summer months.
Types Of Fish
Sport fishing charters in Kona target many species of fish. The most sought after fish is the giant Blue Marlin. There are usually a couple of grander’s (marlin over one thousand pounds) taken every year. There are several Marlin fishing tournaments each year in Kailua Kona, Hawaii. The other billfish targeted are the Spearfish, Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Black Marlin and the Swordfish. Tuna is a great sport fish and you will find the Albacore, Bigeye, Skipjack and Yellowfin Tuna roaming the seas of the Kona Coast. Mahi Mahi (Dorado), Ono (Wahoo), Kahala (Amberjack), Ulus (Giant Trivially) and few other minor species are also target by some of the charter boats out of Kona. It is no wonder with the varieties of fish, the calm seas, the wonderful Hawaiian weather, and the majestic Hawaiian scenery that Kailua Kona, Hawaii is a major fishing destination for many anglers around the world.
There are several methods of angling that the sport fishing charter boats use to catch their fish. The most common method is by trolling. Next might be the live bait method which a small live Tuna or Mackerel is pulled behind the charter boat to lure the bigger fish to the gaff. A few sport fishing charters offer bottom fishing where some bait is dropped down to the bottom to entice a fish to bite. Vertical jigging is a technique of bottom fishing and is a quick way to catch small jacks. This type of fishing is a craze with the Japanese youth. Captain Chuck is very good at vertical jigging and is almost famous in Japan.

Thanks again for the fantastic fishing charter. All the best to you and I hope we go fishing again sometime in the future.
Just a follow-up to say, again, how much we enjoyed our charter with you last Wednesday, and especially to thank you again for those wahoo fillets!!! I know it’s not something that all the captains do, and we really appreciated it. We prepared them as recommended and they were spectacular! Great recipe (panko, etc.). We’ll be happy to recommend “Hooked Up” to anyone we know traveling to Kona.
Thanks again to you and Carl for sending us home with a mahi.
Since I was taking my daughter Megan along and wanted more action and was less concerned about a chance at a marlin, Chuck planned a trip accordingly. We did some trolling early, but had a great time working a hot ahi bite near one of the buoys.
Just wanted to send you a big thank you for the great day on the water. We all saw action and that’s we we asked for. Sometimes you tie into a big one, some times you don’t. It was a good day to be on the water.
Julie and I had a great time with you guys….the marlin was a nice way to spend an afternoon, too!! No one believes that she was 625#…until they see the pics!!
Just wanted to send a quick thanks out to Jim, Bill & yourself for the great day fishing. I’m already trying to convince my brothers to make the trek down to Kona for a guys only trip.
I just wanted to say thanks for the 3rd awesome fishing trip in a row. Last year I was lucky enough to catch a 95 lb. sailfish and Russ caught a 180 lb. blue marlin, and we got several mai mai, ono, and tuna on the south point 2 day trip. this year I was lucky enough to catch a 300 lb. blue marlin and Gayle caught a 150 lb. blue marlin. what a trip it was. You, your boat, and the crew is the best thanks again.
We had avery nice time. Your crew was excellent. We will be back again. Thank you so much. 🙂
Thanks again for a great day of fishing on the 19th. We are already looking at our calendar for some dates for next year.
